Some modifications I've done to my Westfield
2004-11-24 - Finally got around to taking some pics of mods to the bootbox so I have some badly needed stowage space (it's not big anyway, but a little is better than none!)
Winter 2005 I did several things to the car:
Cooling system - Re-did a critical part of the system, the main connector between pump inlet, intake manifold, radiator and expansion tank. Complex module that I "hacked" quickly together last year and that needed to get done properly.
Anti-roll bars - The way the car handled made me want anti-roll bars. Not only was the car heavily biased towards oversteer, but it was also rolling quite a lot and although the camper compensation on the car is good, it doesn't like rolling all that much. Also, a stiffer car will be faster in the cone slalom than a softer one. So it needed stiffening and the arb's can be used to balance the car, so it was an obvious choice. In the end, after scratching my head many times, I purchased the "original" part from Westfield, but built my own mounts and sliding mechanisms, as most of the parts I already had, and I could thus save perhaps £200 or so in cost. Worthwhile. But as always it takes more time than planned so it took about twice as much time as I would have liked.
Diff breather - I noticed during the first season that sometimes it was "wet" near the rear diff and on the fuel pumps, filter and catch tank every now and then. But I could never find the actual leak. My conclusion is that the breather pipe was too short, something that I've heard others have trouble with as well. So I lengthened the breather and put a fuel filter on the end to catch any that bubbles out.
Aluminium flywheel - I wanted to save weight (about 4kgs as it turned out), but also I wanted the engine to lower the revs quicker when I let off the throttle and to do that, I needed a lighter flywheel. When the deal for these flywheels came up on the Westfield Sports Car Club forums, I had to take it. The nice pics were taken by the seller, Pete .
Summer 2005:
Hit by a motorbike - on the first warm evening I'm cruising along to go drive a go-kart. As I turn left onto the driveway of the place, suddenly there's a big bang and a guy is flying over me, apparenly running his motorbike into my rear quarter panel. Not huge damage and I was lucky. He got to go first class limousine to the hospital wearing a neck brace. Not my fault, but very irritating.
